Double Yellow-headed Amazon

If I had been told five or six years ago that I would have a bird as a best friend I would say it was crazy, but here I am! My double yellow is named Sweetie. She is five years old, and I just love her. Sweetie had been sold by a local bird-shop owner, "half down, and the rest in thirty days when you pick her up". She was being boarded by my friend who breeds cockatiels, until the people came to pick her up. I moved here and was renting a room from my cockatiel breeding friend, and Sweetie started to make friends with me. Well, the people never came back to get her, and she just flirted with me, and kept it up until I gave in and payed the rest that was owed on her and bought her for myself. I don't think of her as a pet at all, but a very close friend and companion. She shares all my meals, and is very partial to Italian food. She has a great big cage, and lots of toys, and all my friends tell me that I spoil her rotten! She is very social, but doesn't like to be touched by strangers. With me she is very loving and sweet. I am so happy she came into my life, and look forward to spending the rest of my days with my l'il Sweetie!
Jim G.

Amazon Parrots - More Information

Yes they can be loud. Yes they can bite. IT'S A PARROT! I've had my nape for 18 of her 22 years. I'm definately hers, but she goes to my son with just a warning from him. Don't you know there are exceptions to every rule. I think the bird knows you don't like him. All animals can sense things people can't. I'm glad the bird is away from you.
ellie

Amazon Parrots - More Information

Apollo is an amazing parrot, so sweet and gentle. He is mellow and relaxed most of the time but when he yells, watch out! The phrase gentle giant definitely fits his personality. We are so lucky to have him in our lives and look forward to many more years with him!
Leslie

Amazon Parrots - More Information

Yellow-naped Amazon

I read this description and it couldn't be farther from the truth. Yellow-Naped Amazon parrots are very mean and aggressive towards everyone except their owner (whom of which they bond a little too closely with). My mom has owned one for 28 years and he is one big jerk. If you step out of the room for so much as 30 seconds he will start yelling loudly (literally yelling) and will do so all day long until you come back. But get too close and he'll go on the attack. And when they bite is it is the most painful thing you'll ever experience. Their beaks are very strong and they can easily bite your finger almost down the the bone if they so happen to grab ahold of it.

The yelling may sound cute at first, but give it a couple of years and you'll soon be driven up a wall! My mom finally gave up and gave him to my Nana because she could no longer take the yelling any more. If you do not live by yourself and cannot afford to be around your bird at all times I highly suggest you pick something else as your exotic pet of choice. For as much as these annoying birds cost you could probably afford a tiger.
ross

Amazon Parrots - More Information

Mealy Amazon

I have had my Mealy for 3 years now. I just love my LeeRoy. He is so gentle and loving with my family even my 80 year old grand mother holds him. He has to love Nannie every night before he goes to bed. I bought him because I always go for the underdog and he definitely seemed like the underdog in the birdstore because only the people that worked there would handle him. Not being the brightest colored bird no one seemed to want him. Now I wouldn't trade him for anything. He used to "ride" on my Labrador's back (we lost her in March of 2008). LeeRoy really misses Whitney. He talks almost all the time and has a very large vocab. When Icome home from work everyday he says "Hi Mom" Then "Umm Bite Apple", meaning hi mom can you get me some apple... He is such a joy in our lives and I think he loves my Nannie more than me.
Pam

Amazon Parrots - More Information

Green-cheeked Amazon

We have had Oliver, a (Green Cheek) Red Headed Amazon for 40 years. Oliver was purchased at a dimestore by my mother as a birthday present for my dad. Little did we know that we would still have him today! Ollie outlived dad, four dogs and a cat. He dearly loves my mother and will say hello to her immediately. Oliver also loves my husband and bonded with him years ago when we visited my parents, so it came as no surprise that when we took mom and Oliver home to live with us, Ollie started singing and whistling with my husband as loud or high pitched as he could to show he was his buddy. As a matter of fact, my husband is the only one that can open up the cage and play with his feathers without getting bit. I can only pet his head when we are alone but I don't dare open the cage and put my hand in there. He has forgotten some things he used to say as a young bird but has introduced new sounds instead. He used to sing the birthday song but now only one line of it. He can vocalize arpeggios but only going up the scale, says,
"Hello there", "Hi Oll",("Bye bye"- When we grab our keys or put our coat on), makes a drinking sound, seeds sound going into his cup, silverware scratching on plate sound, a special sound my dad taught him to make when we ask him if he likes what we put in his cup- his eyes also turn bright orange when he shows he likes something too.He can say "night-night" but used to say "night, night, turn out the light" so he has actually shortened his word phrases. He loves oatmeal with milk, fresh or cooked green beans-so he can take out the seeds, corn on the cob, potatoes and butter, chicken leg bones to tear apart, orange and apple slices, raspberries, carrots to tear apart, most nuts. He loves to hold walnuts and pecans in his claw. Big striped sunflower seeds are a necessity everyday. His eyes are always watching you even if he is resting, he doesn't miss a meal or a snack because he knows when the cabinet opens that's where the nuts are! I try to feed him first because he will scream till he gets fed or if we cover him up he will still yell. He gets put in the back bedroom when he can't be quiet when we have alot of company. Oliver loves a good argument. If I raise my voice to talk he does too. If my husband and I are having a conversation he joins in too. If I whisper he talks softly like a little bird cooing.
He used to come out of the cage and stand on top but now is afraid to come out even if the door is open.
He says "hello there" to strange cats and dogs that come to visit. I think he's really frightened but showing he's the boss. When I vacuum he takes a bath in his water cup so I put fresh warm water in there before I begin when I remember to do so.
We cover him on three sides to keep him warm all year round and I make a tent for him when he takes naps. At night he get covered completely and by blankets if its cold. We move the cage around the house so he can be with me or mom during the day. He is afraid of being left by a window or door. I think he's afraid of other birds flying by. But if my husband is outside he loves to watch him. Talk about high maintenance! I know we are programmed by this bird but we're used to it!!! We wouldn't trade him for anything in the world.

Then in 2007, she was viciously and brutally killed by a badger that got into the house by our doggie-door. We have been mourning her death ever since she passed on July 11th, 2007. She was a great pet, a wonderful friend, and very comical.
Red-lored Amazon

The Red Lored is very loyal and affectionate and likes to roll about on the bed, in your lap and sometimes be tickled on the belly or toes while laughing. Mine likes to hear and say phrases with feeling and deep emotion. He also likes the tape and DVD of Red Lored's that Mike Schindlinger PHD made during his Harvard studies. (It's only a few dollars, and Spunky likes it right up next to his ear while he eats. He also likes sharing my headset.) He says "Are you OK?" "Hot" for hot food and warm dinners. He will eat too many seeds and too much food, so we limit his a.m. and p.m. feeding of pellets to 1/8 cup of Roudybush rice or other pellets and really limit any seeds - just seeds as treats. He does like milk thistle as a treat. I slice an almond and that is his favorite. Treats should never be bigger than the parrots's eye in my opinion! He also likes cooked veggies like brocolli and yams and carrots and of course peas in the pod - like for chinese food. Once he played a trick on me when I was in the bath tub and left him alone in his room on his cage - instead of responding to my calls as usual, he hid behind his carrier and didn't say anything until I got out of the tub and walked in the room dripping wet all wrapped up in the towel. I couldn't see him anywhere, but he popped his head out from the carrier and said "Are you a dirty bird?" Which is what I say before he gets his bath. He also laughs in a high squeaky way when he sees his toys and other "funny" things to him! Like my friend Claire that has blonde hair and wears red - he does his "happy dance" whenever he sees her, even if she's outdoors. He loves a cartoon show on T.V. called "Big World" on PBS that has a bird in it! He can count -- it does take him 2 weeks to get used to new toys before he will play with them, and he needs to see me play with them first too. Chewing is his fav passtime and he likes to make chewing gum out of paper and carry it around in a little ball until his beak is clean inside, then he spits it out. Cheers, K.M. and Spunky
Kathleen M

Amazon Parrots - More Information

Does anyone think that is too long to have a parrot? Should I take her to a parrot zoo to be with other parrots and better enviroment?
jadon hooper

Amazon Parrots - More Information
