I picked mine out of 20 different birds of different ages. I was guessing the she was the youngest by size. I was told the beak wouldn't turn red until it was older.Did I really get a ringneck or some other kind of bird?

Over 2 years later and paco has come a long way. He is an outgoing lovable goober who adores my wife, and if she isn't around likes me. God forbid I get near her or him though, if they are together, he will rip me apart. But for the most part he is a great bird. Definitely not for the first time bird owner, like others have commented. It took us 2 years too get him handable and trustworthy, and yes he is very strong.
George

View the full article

I've got a pet red belly hen which I call Sweetums, and I also have a breeder pair that have produced 2 chicks in 2 different clutches. The latest chick hatched in March, I named him Raz and I decided to keep him for a "boyfriend" for Sweetums. He is in a cage next to Sweetums' and he's been doing a mating dance and he's only a little more than 5 months old. I'm hoping that they will bond. He's really a cute little guy and I hope that when he's mature enough that Raz and Sweetums will bond and start producing babies. I just don't know when I should put them together. Should I wait until Raz is at least 2 years old, or should I put them together now. BTW, Sweetums is almost 4 years old. My breeder pair were already bonded when I got them.

Blue-crowned Conure

I LOVE birds, and I always wanted a cockatoo, but after much research and constantly visiting a pet store, I quickly realized this was not the species for me. I spent months researching the "perfect" bird. I was looking for affection, strong bonding, funny factor, size, and least on the list was talking ability but a plus. It wasn't until I saw the true documentry, "The parrots of Telegraph Hill"--a real tear jerker, but it was there I became enamored with Conures, and especially the Blue Crown, because of the main star named Conner. After visting a local pet store, I was thrilled they were weaning a 7 week old baby Blue Crown. I visited her every day for a 7 weeks, waiting for her to finish weaning. We bonded, so strongly. It was hard to leave her daily and I couldn't wait to see her. She would be waiting for me everyday and soon as she spotted me she would make this cute crying noise until I would hold her. As soon as I would put her back, she would watch me leave and start her crying. She is the love of my life. Her vocabulary is unbelievable at 14 weeks she knows so much. She is glued to me, follows me everywhere. She loves to shower and must of all she loves to take naps with me, right under my neck. My little Nina (pronounced Neenya, Spanish for little girl) is my Cockatoo. She is everything I could have asked for, and she surpassed all my expectations. This is by far my FAVORITE species.
Jaclyn

View the full article

Even decade(s)! My old male grey finally gave up the ghost-- purchsed in June 1994, He was nearing the age of 15 YEARS, and he finally passed away this August 30th, 9:30 pm. A phenom of the chirp, and beeper of eons. All he ate was a seed diet, and he might have lasted a year or two more with better care on my part.
jim

View the full article

Red-bellied Parrot

Nicholas is my six-year old redbelly. I got him as a companion to my Meyer's, Dax, but she is imprinted on humans and will not tolerate his advances. Nonetheless, I think they may enjoy just being around each other while I'm out of the house.

Nicky is a great talker and has mastered about 75 words. He says, "Good morning!" each morning, "Goodnight, sleep well!" when I put him to bed, "Don't eat the glasses!" as he runs up my shoulder to try to grab them, and "Bye bye" or "I won't be gone long" or "I'll be right back," when I leave the house. He just seems to pick phrases up without any effort on my part.

I worked and worked to no avail trying to teach Dax, my Meyer's, to talk, but she is a wonderfully sweet parrot, who loves all humans. Nicholas is more of a one-person bird. The two of them are great company for me, and I wouldn't trade them for anything.
bill

View the full article

Spice Finch

Hey, man I am very happy that I have succeeded in breeding my wild birds (spice, silver bill, and red strawberry finch) in my cage. My spice finch laid two eggs but only on baby came out. The silver bill laid 4 eggs and I got 4 chicks. But one, I don't know how, died. Now only 3 chicks there. And the strawberry finch laid 5 eggs. She did not hatch the eggs she laid the until the final, then I got 5 chicks. My finches are wild in Pakistan. People caught them in fields, then sold them in the market. I also have a wild tricolored nun pair, many more zebra finches, and only one society finch male. I don't know from where I will get another society one, in our market there are no society finches.
Hassan

View the full article

Umbrella Cockatoo

After all our kids moved out, we purchased our Aussie (umbrella cockatoo) when he was only 9 weeks old. Neither of us owned a large bird before (just small birds). HE IS THE BEST! He is 1 yrs old now. He doesn't say clear words yet but sure tries to say "good boy" and "Hi". We were amazed when we were able to potty train him in only a week. YEA. His wings are clipped but he walks all over the house as if he's the boss. When we get up and get ready for work, we bring Aussie out to keep us company and let him play while we get ready for work. Then when we have to leave we tell him we have to go to work and put him in his cage with the tv on and say "by-bye". He is in his cage during the day while we are at work which is a 72x36x48 loaded with toys, light/ceiling fan on, and a tv that is on while we are away (of course, cartoon network so he doesn't pick up anything bad). When we get home, we bring him out, he goes "potty", we applaud his good behavior and then he does whatever. He has a play gym in the living room that he can go on whenever he wants and a toy box loaded with all kinds of toys. He loves his balls he plays with that are soft rubber and some with little balls inside that he removes within seconds. He gets play time until 1 hour before bedtime and then we allow him to sit on our laps and get his nightly backrub/neckrub. He loves to be rubbed while he hides his head in a blanket or even our shirt. When he gets loud or out of control, we cover him with a blanket. If that doesn't work, then we have a "time-out" cage (36x36x48-his starter cage)in another separate room with a door. If he is naughty (perhaps bites), he gets "time-out". Usually only 10-15 min depending on the issue then we get him out and continue on as if nothing happened. He is a perfect angel when he comes out. He always tries to come to the one that put him in time out as if to say he's sorry---way awesome. He goes to bed at the same time every night-around 9pm. He is an awesome addition. Time out really works as it is in a different room from his normal cage and there is no toys and we leave the room dark. When he does good, we literally clap our hands and say "Aussie, good boy" and continue to reinforce that he is being a good boy. He knows commands such as: no, eat, potty, come, standup, stepdown, nite-nite and yes he can shake. We are looking forward to him talking, hopefully soon. He eats Zupreem fruits and veggies (pellet foods). He likes broccoli, carrots, king crab legs, shrimp, lobster and some fish. He also loves scrabbled egg beaters with me for breakfast. He eats raisens, soup crackers, animal cookies, peanuts and dry cereal. He likes to "chew" so we be sure to have things he can chew on everywhere so he won't chew on what he shouldn't. Oh yea, he loves to shower with us--this is a funny experience. He is quite at night and even when we sleep in on a weekend, he doesn't make a sound until we open his door and say "good morning".
These are awesome pets if you have space, time, compassion and lots of luv to give.
John Shelley Show

View the full article
